The L.L. Stewart Faculty Scholars Project Summary - Leslie Burns

Leslie BurnsMy L.L. Stewart Scholar project focused on bringing together scholars from across campus who research focuses on consumer behavior; i.e., the understanding of product characteristics desired by consumers, factors that affect consumers’ decision making processes within the market, and the design and production of products and services that meet consumers’ wants and needs. Consumer scientists are found in many disciplines. For example, at OSU consumer scientists can be found in academic units including the Colleges of Business and Pharmacy; Schools of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and Mechanical, Industrial, and Manufacturing Engineering, and Departments of Design and Human Environment, Human Development and Family Sciences, Anthropology, Psychology, Women Studies, Communications, Food Science and Technology, Wood Science and Engineering, and Forest Resources; and the Food Innovation Center. This L.L. Stewart project provided opportunities for these individuals to interact, share research interests, and build collaborations to stimulate advancements in research and technology transfer partnerships. The outcome of this project was to build a community of scholars of consumer behavior. As a result of this L.L. Stewart Scholar project, new faculty partnerships have been formed, interdisciplinary research projects have been conducted, and faculty are now exploring the creation of a multidisciplinary “institute” that institutionalizes these partnerships and alliances.

Biography

Dr. Leslie Davis Burns is currently Professor and Chair of the Department of Design and Human Environment in the College of Public Health and Human Sciences at Oregon State University. At OSU since 1985, she also has held the positions of Associate Vice Provost for Academic Affairs and Interim Vice Provost for Academic Affairs.

Dr. Burns teaches and conducts research on topics related to the international textile and apparel industries, merchandising management, consumer behavior, and fashion theory. She is the author or co-author of seven books including the textbook, The Business of Fashion: Designing, Manufacturing, and Marketing, 4th edition (2011, NYC: Fairchild Books), and over 60 research articles related to consumer decision making and the domestic and international textile and apparel industries. Her research has appeared in journals including the Journal of Consumer Marketing, the Clothing and Textiles Research Journal, the Journal of Fashion Marketing and Management, the Journal of Psychology, and Social Behavior and Personality. In addition, Dr. Burns has directed 26 master’s degree and 9 Ph.D. students.

Dr. Burns has received numerous honors. She holds Fellow recognition in the International Textile and Apparel Association (ITAA) and was named Distinguished Scholar of the ITAA. She also received the Educator of the Year Award from Apparel Magazine. In addition, she has received the OSU Faculty Service Award, Woman of Achievement Award, Bressler Senior Faculty Teaching Award, L.L. Stewart Scholar Award, and the Beaver Champion Award (1 given each year by the President of Oregon State University).  She served as President of ITAA in 2008 and as the President of the OSU Faculty Senate in 2010.

Dr. Burns holds a BA from Washington State University (1978) and a PhD in Consumer Sciences and Retailing from Purdue University (1981). Previous to Oregon State, she held faculty positions at Utah State University and San Diego State University.
